Commander Cousteau left us 20 years ago, having helped several generations to dream with his documentary films of marine life.

A naval officer before he became the oceanographic explorer we all know, Jacques-Yves Cousteau was also the co-inventor of the Aqua-Lung, which he patented with Emile Gagnan in 1945. In 1950, he founded the French Oceanographic Campaigns, for the production of colour underwater films. He was assisted by millionaire Thomas Loel Guinness, who offered him Calypso, a boat as famous as its captain, which sailed on a multitude of expeditions over almost forty years.

Despite some controversy regarding the methods used in his explorations, Cousteau unarguably worked to improve the technology required for underwater photography and continues to inspire documentary makers and major film directors alike.

We invite you to take a dive to the heart of our underwater image collection.
